Power LED spotlight

The spotlight LED is now available in a version with 1mm, 1W (350mA) power LED dice.

The  heat dissipation of the module is realized by the aluminium housing, not as typical for many other power LED setups by a metal core PCB. As a consequence the module can be connected or soldered without the use of heat sink paste to an arbitrary FR4 PCB.

The photo on the bottom left shows a green power LED spotlight in the corner of a dark corridor. If placed at a suitable position the module is able to illuminate a 20m long corridor sufficiently for orientation. Power consumption: 1W!

PowerLED_pointer Power LED Pointer

A new development also on the basis of a 1W power LED is the power LED pointer. Inside the module a short piece of POF is coupled to a power LED die. A plastic lens then forms an image of the POF endface. The module generates a rather small bright light spot that can be used as an alternative to laser pointers for indication or light barriers.

Similar to the fabrication process of POF transceiver modules the DieMount Spotlight LED is fabricated by the use of microstructed submounts, too. This LED setup allows to catch nearly all the light emitted from the LED die and to transmit it with high efficiency into a small solid angle of ±3-4°. The light loss typical for other package types is avoided. This allow the effective illumination of many kinds of objects. The LED operating current can be rather low, thus inceasing the LED lifetime and decreasing electric power consumption.

Signal lights for traffic application can be directed exactly to the observer, because the side light of standard LED packages is avoided. The fabrication of white light sources by mixing the three colours red, green and blue is feasible with spotlight LED. Spotlight LED that emit light of each wavelength are available (even infrared up to 1.3µm wavelength). Potential applications are:
  • Light signals (traffic illumination for road, ship and air traffic)
  • Illumination (home illumination, outdoor advertising, microscopic object illumination)
  • Sensors (light barriers, reflective measurement systems, colour measurement systems, infrared night illumination)
  • Fiber chip coupling to thick optical waveguides, fiber illumination

60 units of spotlight LED (the photo left shows 640nm LED) are able to generate a high optical radiation power far above the eye safety limit. Nevertheless the power consumption of the module is about 3W only. Long-term usage without any heat sink and fan heats it up slightly to about 40°C.

Spotlight-LED application:

RGB-illumination unit with 8 green, 6 red and 2 blue Spotlight-LED modules
The combination of 16 spotlight modules with green, red and blue LED is arranged according to the left photo and combined with a diffusor foil. The light of all wavelengths is mixed and a white light lamp results from this setup. Separate current control of each LED colour allows to fine tune the colour temperature.
Pigtail LED
LED comprising POF-pigtails
LED comprising POF-pigtails are very useful to illuminate brightly parts in the interior of an apparatus or a machine that does not allow to bring in an LED and its current supply directly. Due to the high coupling efficiency between LED and POF the optical power at the POF endface is up to 4mW at 20mA LED current only.

POF fed lens radiator
In the ourdoor area of a building flexible aligned lens tubes are mounted that focus the light from the POF feeder to the point that shall be visible by night (e.g. key hole in the door, name sign, stair step). By night 2mW optical power are sufficient for orientation. The power consumption of about 50mW is low enough to switch on the module day and night. As the energy is fed optically from the indoor area, there is no risk that the power line is taped by not authorized persons e.g. burglars.

If the LED module is coupled to a POF that is designed for side light radiation (side light POF), light  radiating objects can be made for living room design. The low power consumption allows to operate the object  day and night.
Brockenhexe
The left example demonstrates how side light fibers can be used on a black felt to form a collage for a DieMount fair booth. The collage shows a witch from the mountan Brocken close to the DieMount site Wernigerode.
