Qualification of POF networks
After the installation of POF cables in a home network, the installer must provide the technical proof that the cables installed by him are of the specified quality characteristics.
In particular, it must be shown that
- an installed POF cable has a sufficiently low attenuation for the power budget of the optical transmission system, and
- that the optical signal power at the cable end is sufficiently high for the receiver.
The newly developed “POF installation tester” supports the installer in carrying out these tasks.

Due to its high dynamic range of 45dB, its insensitivity to external light sources and an integrated LED source with the typical spectral attributes of a POF data transceiver, the POF installation tester is suitable to determine, if the attenuation of an installed simplex or duplex POF cable is sufficient to carry out correct data transmission in a transmission system with defined optical power budget.
The POF installation tester operates according to the lock in amplifier principle. Light coming from other sources like stray light or ambient natural or artificial light does not influence the measurement result. This advantage is of special value, if the cable attenuation is high due to a long POF cable.
A great practical advantage is the option of having no active electronic device, such as an optical transmitter or receiver, installed on the opposite end of the cable. Instead, it is possible to simply create an “optical short-circuit” at the other end of the cable and measure the attenuation only from one side.
